Most likely it will be due to a worn out or failing Hard Drive.....also possibly a bad Hard Drive SATA Cable.
The other reason is an issue with third party software. And if you have a much newer computer, then going back to a 2012 model will make that 2012 model seem even slower than before.
You can check the health of the Hard Drive by running DriveDx (free trial period) and posting the complete text report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper on the forum editing toolbar.
To look for other possible issues, run the third party app EtreCheck and post the complete report here so we can examine it for possible clues.
