Bass to garageband input issues

I have my electric bass connected to my Mcbook air via Focusrite Scarlet. Input on Scarlet is showing it works (can hear bass with "direct input" button engaged.) MacBook input is showing that it can hear my bass, but GarageBand, if it registers the bass at all is very quiet and distorted. the bass registers as clicks almost as if my input levels are maxed out. The level indicator in GarageBand only moves if I have the input level on Scarlet set at 3 o'clock or higher.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why I can't get this to work! I tried it on my iPhone and I have the exact same issue.
