If I’m using an app and then navigate back to the Home Screen, iTunes stops playing. Is this happening to anyone else? Advice on how to fix it?

If you pay for a subscription this shouldn't happen. But there was an issue with Facebook, which caused this and Facebook released an update on October 7th, which fixed an issue like you're describing.
Do you mean Apple Music? iTunes is a store on iPhone. Do you have a paid subscription to Apple Music?
I’ve noticed it especially (but not exclusively) coming out of Facebook
