How can I convert heic to jpg on windows 10 without losing quality?

Hi all,

My working MacBook Pro is broken and needs to wait two weeks to get it fully repaired. Currently, I am on a backup Windows 10 PC. Unfortunately, the HEIC image format is still not supported and I can't view and edit heic images imported from my iPhone.

I am on a time sensitive project and needs to get those heic images converted to JPG for editing. Does anyone know a reliable way to convert heic to jpg on Windows 10?

I was in the same situation when my MacBook was out for repair and I had to finish editing photos on a Windows 10 PC. Couldn’t open HEIC files from my iPhone at all, so I had to convert HEIC to JPG quickly without losing quality. After some trial and error, here’s what actually worked for me — two reliable methods that don’t mess with your image quality.

Method (1): TunesBro HEIC Converter (best for bulk, full quality)

If you’ve got a lot of photos and care about detail, TunesBro HEIC Converter is the way to go.

(1) Launch the app and drag your HEIC images into the window.

(2) Set the output format to **JPG** and make sure the quality slider is at **100%**.

(3) Click “Convert” and it’ll process them all locally — no compression, no upload, full EXIF preserved.

I compared before and after versions and honestly couldn’t spot any difference. It’s perfect when you need to **convert HEIC to JPG** safely on your own machine, especially for client or private work.

**Method (2): Use an online site (for a few images)**

You can use the online site to **convert HEIC to JPG** — perfect for a small number of images when you can’t install software. They don’t lose quality in the conversion.

Recommended Sites: CloudConvert.com or iLoveIMG.com

Steps:

(1) Go to the website in your browser (Chrome, Edge, etc.).

(2) Click “Select Files” and choose your HEIC images.

(3) Ensure the output format is set to JPG or JPEG.

(4) Click “Convert.”

(5) Download the converted files.

Only use this for non-sensitive images since you’re uploading them to a third-party server. For personal or client work, desktop software like TunesBro is a lot safer.

Between the two, I stick with TunesBro for large projects — it’s faster, keeps everything offline, and consistently gives perfect results when I need to convert HEIC to JPG without losing quality.

I ran into this exact mess last month (Mac in repair, stuck on a Windows 10 box with a deadline). I needed to convert heic to jpg fast without the images getting crushed. Two clean, first-party ways worked for me—no sketchy converters or adware.

Method (1): Microsoft Photos + HEIF extension (good for batches, stays local)

(1) Install “HEIF Image Extensions” from Microsoft Store (Windows might also nudge you for the Microsoft HEVC add-on—grab it if prompted).

(2) Open Photos, select the HEIC shots, click Export → choose JPEG, set Quality to 100%, and don’t resize.

(3) Export to an SSD/local folder, then spot-check one file at 100% zoom; EXIF stays intact and the pixels match the original dimensions.

Method (2): Let the iPhone hand you JPEGs on import (best when the pics are still on the phone)

(1) On iPhone: Settings → Photos → “Transfer to Mac or PC” → choose Automatic (this tells iOS to hand Windows a JPEG instead of HEIC when you plug in).

(2) Connect the iPhone to the PC via USB, then import via the Photos app or File Explorer; the files land as JPEGs at full resolution.

(3) If you already copied HEICs over, re-import the critical shots with Automatic enabled to avoid any quality surprises.

Why these two: both use Apple/Microsoft plumbing, so you avoid extra compression, keep metadata, and stay within tools your IT won’t side-eye. For reference, Apple’s HEIF/HEVC explainer (and the “Transfer to Mac or PC” bit) is here:

Bottom line: Photos export (with the HEIF extension) is the fastest Windows-native path, and the iPhone “Automatic” setting is perfect if you can re-import from the device. Between the two, you can convert heic to jpg quickly without introducing visible quality loss.

Windows 10 doesn't include native support for HEIC format by default, so you can't open .heic photos directly in the Photos app without adding a codec. To enable HEIC support, you can install the HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Simply open the Store, search for "HEIF Image Extensions," and click Get to install it. This extension lets your system recognize and display HEIC images properly. This is a quite good choice without using a HEIC to JPG converter from Windows 10.

After installing the HEIF extension, you may also need to install the HEVC Video Extensions if your HEIC photos include HEVC-encoded data (common with photos from iPhones). You can find it in the Microsoft Store as well, though it may require a small purchase.

Once both extensions are installed, Windows 10's Photos app and File Explorer will show HEIC thumbnails and open them seamlessly. You can also convert heic to jpg from Windows 10 as well.

HEIC is a native image format for Apple devices. If you could find a Mac, then it is easy to view heic images and convert heic to jpg without third-party apps.

Using HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices - Apple Support

To convert HEIF and HEVC media manually, export it to a different format from an Apple or third-party app. For example:

For Mac user: If you open an HEIF image in Photos or Preview app, choose File > Export, then choose a format such as JPEG before saving.

For Windows users: You can use a dedicated HEIC to JPG converter in Windows 10/11. This is a much more safe and fast option. This Microsoft tech community post shares a couple of good way for converting heic to jpeg on Windows PC.

Lastly, you can use a command line to convert .heic to .jpg on Windows or Mac if you are a tech savvy.

libheif is an open-source library designed to read and write HEIF/HEIC image files, which are modern, highly efficient image formats based on the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC/H.265) standard.

@echo off
if not exist jpg mkdir jpg
for %%F in (*.heic *.HEIC) do (
  echo Converting %%F → jpg\%%~nF.jpg
  heif-convert "%%F" "jpg\%%~nF.jpg"
)
echo Done!
pause

libheif is an open-source library that provides full support for reading and writing images in the HEIF, including Apple’s HEIC files. It’s built on top of modern compression technologies like HEVC (H.265), which allows images to maintain high visual quality at significantly smaller file sizes compared to JPEG. The library is written in C and comes with command-line utilities like heif-convert and heif-info, making it a popular choice among developers and advanced users for efficient image conversion and processing.

Beyond simple file conversion, libheif supports advanced HEIF features such as image sequences, thumbnails, alpha channels, depth maps, and metadata like EXIF and XMP. It integrates seamlessly with other open-source projects like ImageMagick, GIMP, and FFmpeg, providing them with HEIC decoding and encoding capabilities. Because of its portability and active maintenance, libheif is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows, and serves as the core technology behind many modern HEIC-to-JPG converters and photo viewer applications.
