Logic not starting after reinstall

  1. Reinstalled MacOS as per apple instructions
  2. Deleted Logic app and preferences file - reinstalled from App Store
  3. All midi inputs disconnected
  4. Ejected 3 of 6 external drives, others say "in use by finder or app"
  5. When opened Logic runs but
  6. - au validation check does not happen
  7. - all menu functions are greyed out
  8. Activity monitor shows Logic using 100% CPU - #2 on the list, mds_stores is #1
  9. Thought it might be initalizing something, but after 3 hours, nothing has changed

I'm out of ideas. Is this a common occurance?

Try rebooting in Safe mode and see how Logic behaves.

Safe mode will often correct weird software behavior by forcing the OS to clear caches, do disk repair and other self-maintenance and housekeeping and temporarily disables third-party mods.

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

TIP - Use a wired USB keyboard for this as a wireless kbd may not respond quickly enough to trigger safe boot. If you have the Magic Keyboard, plug that into the Mac with its charging cable.

Does the same thing happen while in Safe mode?

If not, this is an indication that some third-party software may be responsible for the bad behavior.

You can exit safe mode by restarting your Mac normally, then reevaluate the problem.

Also, if you still have CleanMyMac installed, you should uninstall it per the publisher's guidance and see what happens. CMM is very often implicated in the bad behavior of a Mac. Many veteran Mac users liken CMM to malware. The same goes for any other anti-virus, speeder-upper, VPN or similar apps. They aren't needed and often cause trouble.

Very strange behavior.

In a perfect world, yes, this will give you a clean slate to work with.

Follow Apple's guidance to use the Erase Assistant to erase and reset your Mac to factory settings.

Apple M1 Max

64 GB

15.7.1 (24G231)

Latest Logic

50+ third party plugins (all have been removed from Components, VST, etc. folders - so none active at the moment)

Was trying some new plugins. Also Beta testing a plugin update for a developer. Had some weird events that I couldn't replicate - some seeming to be at the system level. (For example, when opened, Preview began loading multiple files. Had to force quit.)

Finally decided to get back to ground zero. Reinstalled MacOS. No problems there. Uninstalled Logic and reinstalled from app store.

Ejected all external drives. Disconnected all midi.

Tried hold down ctrl and shft-ctrl with Logic, but it never boots.

Activity monitor shows high activity. Open files/ports shows:

/Library/Caches/com.apple.logic10/Cache.db-wal

as the last entry. It seems to be stuck here.

I deleted com.apple.logic10 folder, emptied trash, restarted. The folder was rebuilt, but Logic is stuck in the same place.

Here's the last few lines of the activity monitor open files section. It has stopped at the last entry.

-Uninstalled CCM, have no VPN or Firewall

-Ejected all external drives

-Disconnected all usb and midi

-Uninstalled and reinstalled Logic

-Shut down, booted into safe mode (holding shft key) - apple keyboard was already wired

No change. Same info on activity monitor.

Everything else seems OK. Final Cut Pro boots up, as do other DAW type apps.

Question. I have everything backed up. If I do a full erase of the Mac Studio, will I have a clean slate to work with? If so, I can install Logic and then slowly reinstall plugins and such.
