I have an iMac from 2009, running OS 10.11. Can I update the OS to a newer version?

Thanks

If it's a Late 2009 iMac, you can upgrade it to High Sierra (10.13.*) – but no further.

High Sierra is extremely out of date, and most software vendors have abandoned it. However, you would be a little better off than with El Capitan. The version of Firefox that runs on El Capitan (Firefox 78 ESR) stopped getting even "critical security updates" years ago, whereas the version that runs on High Sierra (Firefox 115 ESR) still gets them.

If it is a Late 2009 Mac, I would strongly suggest making a bootable clone backup on an external drive before doing the High Sierra upgrade. Then download, and install, High Sierra using the App Store link in How to download and install macOS - Apple Support .
