2012 Macbook Pro, lost disk, need to reinstall

I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro that had a disk crash. Unfortunatly, there is no backup available. So, I have installed a new SSD. I need to download an OS, and make a bootable USB to reinstall. I think Sierra was the version I had. Do I need an ISO file, or what? So far I have tried several downloads, created the USB and booted the MacBook pro only to have the install hang.

Not sure where to go.

Refer to How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support and the instructions that follow On an Intel-based Mac. The first option is not applicable since there will be no Recovery partition. You will need to use one of the two Internet Recovery options.

No ISOs for macOS.

The procedure described in High Sierra "The Recovery Server Could Not Be Contacted" Error. FIXED 2024 - Apple Community may be applicable.
