Tab groups expanded by default in Safari

Previously, I've been using sidebar in safari to navigate between tab groups, which was really convenient. You just select tab group, and you navigate between tabs... However, after recent update (or maybe I just pressed something), when you press cmd + shift + L to open sidebar, selected tab group is expanded by default. Moreover, if you select another tab group, it will be expanded immediately. It's pretty inconvenient, when you have 10+ tabs per group, and it starts lagging when you scroll it (well, imagine tab group with 50 tabs). Did anyone encounter this as well?

Even if you collapse a tab group manually, it will be expanded again after reopening sidebar.

This is the dumbest, UNCONTROLLABLE update I’ve ever seen. Why do I need my sidebar expanded with all the tabs in a group when THEY ARE AT THE TOP OF THE BROWSER!!?? Apple design has really fallen off the last few years. There is literally no setting to keep the tab groups from auto expanding. Apple needs to fix this ASAP, but alas, they wont. Chrome actually has a cool feature where their tab groups are at the top, and you click on the group to expand all the tabs in that group. Given Safari’s recent issues I’ve been having with it not wanting to fill fields or highlight words (you double click on it and it highlights but in grey, you have to unhighlight the word then click again for it to be blue), I’m going back to chrome. I gave it my best Safari, but bye bye.

I discovered a workaround to avoid the hassles of scrolling. At the top, there is a "Hide Sidebar" button, selecting this will hide the side bar, and create a pull down control at the top. When you pull this down, it displays the equivalent of what was our dear forlorn original 24-karat pure unadulterated gold of a Side bar. Ofcourse, it's not the same as original, i.e. you will have to mouse up and click on the pull down, BUT no more scrolling through gazillion tabs. Hope this helps.

Simply put: The purpose of Tab Groups is to navigate to the tab GROUPS....not individual tabs. Most users typically use 8 tabs groups with about 8 tabs each..and this is where the Tab Groups feature shone. The side bar for navigating to the tab GROUP and the individual tab at the top.

By creating the expansion feature of the sidebar Tab Group, and then making it expand each and every time one clicks on it, and THEN make it non-configurable...just highlights lack of user empathy.

As such we have been living with cranky behavior with popups and special content (which run easily on Chrome and FireFox)...with a compromise of other good features. But this really takes away something good it had.

This has also been driving me nuts the last few days. I thought I was going crazy since it never used to do that, and I don't remember updating anything, but I guess I'm glad to know that it happened to everyone and I'm not crazy...

I use this for work everyday to keep all the tabs for different projects separated and I am constantly switching between groups and it's extremely annoying that the tab groups keep popping open. If it doesn't get fixed soon I may have to find another browser or an extension that does it better.

Im using 6 Apple devices (including 2 iPhones, iPad and Mac), 3 laptops with Windows and one phone with Android. Chrome could be my natural choice as it is supporting all those platforms. I still stayed with Safari because tabs management there WERE much better. Very intuitive, fast and simple. Now it works similar as Chrome with extension "Vertical Tabs" (annoying auto expansion of each tab group after click). I would still prefer simplicity of old tab groups in Safari and hope that Apple will fix that. Otherwise why should't I switch to multi platform solution which offers exactly the same? BTW I hope this change was not intentional as Safari tabs on iPad iOS works still same so without auto expansion.
