I want to use my iMac Pro 27 as an external display with my MacBook Air M2. How can I do that?

The iMac Pro doesn't support being used as a hardware monitor for any other computer.

That feature, called Target Display Mode, went away in Late 2014 when the first 27" 5K Retina iMac came out. It never returned. Apple later added restrictions such that no current or recent Mac supports using any iMac (even one of the old ones that supports TDM) as a Target Display.

Hey guys thanks for your inputs . I tried screen mirror and it worked between my iMAC as an extended display and MacBook Air .

I forgot about that one. That's AirPlay to Mac. It's not as good as a hardware connection to a real monitor; there may be lags, artifacts, and limitations on resolution.

However, either the iMac Pro or the M2 MacBook Air can be set up to act as an AirPlay Receiver.

There is a workaround product called Luna Display (by Astropad) that could let you use that iMac Pro as a second display, but I'm not sure how practical it is in this situation.

  • The connection is not as good as you would get with a real monitor. The Astropad people themselves say that Luna Display is not recommended for high motion content like that involved with video editing or gaming.
  • You would need to plug the Luna Display device directly into your Mac, and also run a cable between the Macs, to help carry video traffic. Your M2 MacBook Air only has two USB-C / Thunderbolt ports, so unless you had a hub or deck and plugged the second cable into it, the display connections would block other expansion.
