search in Finder doesn't find some files

Searching for files in Finder often omits some files that are in my file system. I notice it most when searching for several Numbers files, but it's a consistent and ongoing problem. How is it possible that Finder and macos can't index files for easy retrieval?

Any solutions to help reset or update Finder, Spotlight, or the indexing function?
