Siri commands on iPhone 16e and new update

Hi guys, I updated from an iPhone 8 to the 16e and the whole time I had the 8 I could use Siri to read out my messages even though my phone was locked. It was super handy to have this feature especially when driving or when my phone was across the room and I was lazy. With the 16 I can no longer ask Siri to do anything except check the time or set a timer everything I have to unlock my iPhone. Is there a way to change this? Specifically for messages.
