Updating Office 2019 to 2024 on Mac Pro with OS 13.7.6

Got a message that I must update from 2019 to 2024 with either Office or 365 at my own expense. Currently running on MacPro on 13.7.6. Two questions.

My inclination is to stick with the current software until I have a problem--since it is no longer supported. Is that Crazy?

If I do update, what kinds of problems might that create on my very old MAC and OS

Microsoft has been dropping support for older versions, and macOS 13 just fell off the usual three most recent macOS versions that they support.

What happens with older and unsupported Office versions? Usually nothing, at least for a while. Then problems. There might be more problems or limits if you’re tied into the web-based Office 365, though.

If you’re not tied to Microsoft 365 / Microsoft Office, there are some fine alternatives that can read and write Office documents. This includes Apple Pages and Keynote and Numbers, LibreOffice, all free, and others.

Based on a quick trip through MacTracker, a MacBook Air (of unspecified year) running macOS 13 can be upgraded to at least macOS 14, and possibly newer. That can be required for newer Microsoft Office.
