How do I remove Malware

A pop up appears on my husbands Macbook Air which says he has Malware. I can't find it, even though it says to delete the file. It seems to be affecting MS Office 365 files, but I am not sure about that. It is not in system files, etc.

The pop-up advertisement lied.

Virus Warning! What to do! - Apple Community

These advertisements lie as part of seeking to cause people to load unnecessary and too-often problematic anti-malware apps.

Remove any add-on anti-malware apps and any add-on VPN apps loaded here, as these apps tend to cause more problems and privacy leaks.

The built-in anti-malware, and the built-in defenses work well, and better still when combined with backups and other mundane system maintenance tasks.

In a way, the advertised add-on security apps too often are the malware.

So how do I find the app? searching has not turned up anything with the name on the pop up. It is just persistantly on desktop.

Are you getting the following message, then?

If so, then it’s either some junk installed, or it’s a very old and very outdated version of one of a few different common apps.

If so, see this:

If you’re seeing some notification spam, then see this:

If this isn’t the malware message you are encountering, please post a screenshot.
