I have an older MacBook late 2009 running High Sierra. I have tried several times without success to format a new WD Passport 2TB external drive. Have followed the instructions but am at a loss. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

You need to erase the whole physical drive instead of just the volume which unfortunately is hidden by default in Disk Utility these days. Use the instructions in the following Apple article to erase the whole physical drive:

Do you have a link to the drive you purchased?
Are you using any adapters, dongles, hubs, or docks to connect this WD drive to your 2009 MacBook?
Disconnect all other external devices just in case they are causing a problem.
Do you have any other computers.....Mac or regular PC running Windows?

My WD Passport 2TB will not format on Older MacBook.
