AirPods only play connected sound and hearing test

My AirPods suddenly lost the ability to produce sound from anything that is not from the software itself. I have reset my phone, updated my phone, forgotten my AirPods, and checked that it is not trying to play through my phone. It only makes sound to show the AirPods are connected and when I initiate the hearing test. Before this my AirPods were acting odd particularly when someone called me, where a drastically slowed audio would play while I was in a call. The audio was so slowed I cannot decipher if it was from what I was watching before getting called or the audio from the call itself being distorted. There is a part of my workplace where passing through makes my AirPods play a strange noise whenever I walk past that I regularly have to cross.
