Just an update. I have now solved the situation. It appears that you now need to pay for for Apple Music subscription to get alac on the windows Apple Music to get the options under playback. All my music I have is purchased a lot from the iTunes Store I’d bought not under subscription. I have used iTunes on windows for many years where I bought albums and songs and was able to covert them to alac under the menu options for free. Having changed to Apple Music on windows I now have no alternative as my music has been removed from the iTunes application.

This is a underhand way of extracting more money out of people.

Disappointed user.

You can revert to iTunes by uninstalling whichever of Apple Music, TV, and Devices you have installed. I would recommend this approach. Apple Music is a poor replacement for iTunes.

Converting mp3 or aac files on your computer to Apple Lossless (alac) doesn't improve their quality. You can rip CDs in lossless format, and download in that quality from some sites, e.g. Bandcamp. I'm pretty sure the Apple Music for Windows app can play locally stored alac tracks, but to get access to better quality streaming copies from the Apple Music catalog requires an active Apple Music subscription.
