MacBook Air 20 M1 chip

I recently had a crash on my MacBook Air 20 that was a M1 chip. However, when I did a recovery and reinstalled following the instructions it did Intel instead. I'm assuming there is no way to fix this. Also, may I add if you are going to reply with a degrading or egotistical attitude, please refrain from commenting. However, will accept nice, polite and knowledgeable responses.

As KiltedTim stated, macOS Recovery will only install a version of macOS that runs on your Mac. You don’t have an Intel version running on your M-series Mac.

If you erased the drive, Recovery will install the version of macOS that was in your Mac when it came out of the box.

Which macOS does Recovery install?

On a Mac with Apple silicon:

  • Recovery installs the current version of the most recently installed macOS.
  • If you installed a macOS upgrade and then used Disk Utility to erase the disk, you might get the macOS that you were using before upgrading.

If you erased the physical drive or the hidden Container instead of just erasing the "Macintosh HD" volume, then your only option at this point is to perform a DFU Firmware Restore which will reset the security enclave chip, system firmware, and internal SSD followed by pushing a clean copy of macOS onto the internal SSD.

Unfortunately this process requires access to another Mac currently running macOS 26 Tahoe, or perhaps even macOS 15.x Sequoia.
