AirPods Pro 3 - cannot run hearing test on iPhone XS Max running latest iOS 18.7

When trying the hearing test (iPhone XS Max, iOS 18.7), it prompts me to 'clean the airpods' first, however these are brand new out of the box Airpods pro 3. I cleaned them but still getting the same issue. Cannot get past this. Is this a bug? Any tips or tricks would be appreciated

SBXS ~ Here's a tip: Check for a weak, aging battery which can cause various issues in what could be a 7-year-old iPhone. So...

Does your iPhone XS Max still have its original battery?

And what's the Maximum Capacity % here?...

I'm not a hardware engineer, so I can only guess that the iPhone's antenna may not be receiving a consistent Bluetooth signal due to the weak iPhone battery.

...Regardless of whether that's true or not, an original iPhone XS Max battery is way overdue for replacement.

Also bear in mind that the 83% is only an algorithmic estimate of a dynamic chemical process. So the battery's actual health could be worse than it appears.

iOS 26 or MacOS 26 is clearly REQUIRED.

System Requirements

  • iPhone models with the latest version of iOS
  • iPad models with the latest version of iPadOS
  • Apple Watch models with the latest version of watchOS
  • Mac models with the latest version of macOS
  • Apple TV models with the latest version of tvOS
  • Apple Vision Pro with the latest version of visionOS
  • AirPods can be used as wireless Bluetooth headphones with Apple devices using earlier software and with non‑Apple devices, but functionality may be limited.

Thanks according to the specs posted

6: The Hearing Aid feature has received FDA authorization. The Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features are supported on AirPods Pro 2 and later with the latest firmware paired with a compatible iPhone or iPad with iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 and later and are intended for people 18 years old or older. The Hearing Aid feature is also supported on a compatible Mac with macOS Sequoia and later. It is intended for people with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.

I read this to say it should work on the latest iOS for my device. The iphone XS max does not (currently) allow for an update post 18.7, and the above specifically calls out as being compatible with iOS 18

That's surprisingly high for such an old model iPhone. But it's still a little weak as 80% is the level at which Apple suggests replacing the battery. So...

Do you know for sure that the battery is the original because you bought the iPhone XS Max brand new?

And please follow the steps in this article to see if it reveals anything about the battery:
