Finger ID not working with Safari and chrome

I have an ID.me account that I use to log in to the IRS, SSA, Medicare, etc. I have it set to use my biometric device. So on my iPhone, I can authenticate with Face ID. However, on my MacBook Pro, when I go to a site like irs.gov, and it asks me to use my finger ID to authorize ID.me, I get the beachball of death, and Safari never recovers and eventually has to be force-quit. Chrome does the same thing, except instead of the beachball chrome just stops working.

Anyone else seen this? Any ideas? I have redone fingerprints, and everything else seems to be working.

Thanks,

Steve
