Merging duplicate contacts on iPhone with multiple email accounts

I have many duplicate contacts. I have looked for the merge under the card …I have looked at the end of the list for merge…nada. I have gone to iCloud and Contacts are not even on iCloud! Now..my contacts are on several accounts ..my email accounts…and wondered if that was interfering? Do I have to get a clean up app?
