Since updating to iPadOs 26, I have not been able to hide the inbox on my iPad.
Is there a trick to this? I read all my emails on my iPad, but there is not much room to read emails when the inbox is showing.
I have made the inbox as small as possible.

As I recall rotating the iPad's orientation from landscape to portrait will enable you to hide the mailbox list, but yes I agree it's an unwelcome and annoying change. If there is another way to cope with it I don't know what it is.

If you click twice one the mail, you want to read, the sidebar goes away.
