address bar in Safari not working

Yesterday my Mac (2018 Pro, Sequoia 15.7) updated Safari to V26.0.

Now I am unable to type in the address bar of a tab, copy the URL, refresh the tab etc. A new tab allows typing.

I have rebooted in safe mode, opened a private window, removed extensions, scanned settings and switched off private relay and none make a difference (with restarts). CMD-L will show a URL and allow copy, but still does not allow typing. Nothing I've tried changes the behaviour.

Grateful for solutions and/or ideas!

Thanks

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 15.7

On another thread I found that changing the settings>tab to separate rather than compact fixed the issue. Not a solution, but a good workaround.
