How do I delete custom MacintoshHD icon. I don’t mean hiding it from the desktop, I just changed the icon a while back with the folder icons so that they would look nice, but now with macOS Tahoe I want to use the default look with built in folder customization but i can’t change the main drive icon back to its default look.

Not used Tahoe yet, however are you able to Get Info on the folder, this should bring up the details and show the icon. You can then copy and paste an icon you like, unless the system has totally changed!
Hi thanks for the answer.
However I don't want to paste a new icon onto the drive icon, I want to delete it so thet it changes to the default Liquid Glass one (the new one where people were surprised that its a ssd instead of a hard drive) but every time I open info about the drive and click the icon in the left top corner and try to delete it I get the error sound and it stays the same.

this is the new default —
if you Control click on a folder you see the "customize" as an option; not true for the Macintosh HD on the Desktop.

Have you tried 'Get Info' on the folder then 'Command X' (cut)?
Command + delete nor command + x works 😓
you can still go to the Get info and change the icon there.
Command Z will undo any changes you make or had made.
Similar to @Jon Hitchcock's suggestion, IIRC I think on older versions of macOS I was able to click the icon in the Get Info window & press the Delete key.
I found a way to fix this. I went to finder > MacintoshHD > system > volumes and some volumes had the default icon and I copied it from there and pasted it to MacintosshHD on the desktop
