For the majority of inkjet printers, the largest cost is in the ink cartridges - these being relatively expensive for the number of pages that can be printed. For some manufacturers, these cartridges are "coded" such that the printer won't accept or work with lower cost third-party cartridges. Many inkjet printers have vey low initial cost to purchase - but the tie-in to having to use OEM cartridges will make cost of ownership much higher than might initially appear.

For inkjet technology printers, those with the lowest running cost instead use ink-tanks in preference to replaceable ink cartridges. These printers are often colloquially known as "tank printers". While the initial purchase cost may be somewhat higher than printers that use cartridges, their running costs are substantially lower.

HP and Epson include "tank printers" in their range - both manufacturers having favourable reputation for printers of this type. While using OEM inks is generally advisable when refill is needed, you can use third-party inks should you choose to do so; using OEM supplies is certainly recommended, in particular while the printer's warranty remains in effect.

Speaking personally, I use an HP Smart Tank 7805. After two years, I'm still using the original ink supply (now 50% used) and have had to change one of the two print heads only once - the replaced print head being considerably cheaper than just one replacement ink cartridge used by an equivalent regular inkjet printer.
