@MrHoffman Thank you for your suggestion. Even if there were something, I'd have to remember to leave it there.
Yes, and that’s part of developing the habit you want here.
Tie yourself to an old keyring or whatever will make noise when it falls off the table when you get up and leave without taking the reading.
If you have an iPhone or iPad or Watch with Siri, set a timer using Siri when you sit.
Whatever works for building a habit.
Your AirTag left behind mechanism would work outside of the home, sort of, but the AirTag is going to learn that you’re home and not enable the left-behind mechanism. And it’s only going to trip after several minutes and some distance traveled, too.
Maybe something tied into a smart light switch, but I have a feeling that won't be long term reliable—my experience with HomeKit is not encouraging. And it's already a three-way switch which is another complication. And thank you for the vocabulary lesson!
This isn’t so much the hardware. There are options there.
The standard scripting and automation tools available here are relatively limited.
The “if now in proximity and continuing to be in proximity for five minutes, and then do something” is a little more complex than the scripting tools are capable.
But an app written in Swift can do this, using detection and proximity of an NFC tag.
