I used to be able to hook up an adapter and download from my Mac to a USB flash drive. For some reason my computer wont let me do that any longer? Ideas on how to reinstate that feature?

Does the flash drive not appear in Finder?
What exactly is preventing you from transferring files to the Usb drive?
How is this USB drive formatted?
Provide details and context about the issue, and someone may be able to advise.
That sounds like the drive is damaged or corrupted.
Does it work on another computer?
Have you tried another flash drive?
Try opening the Disk Utility.app, and if it appears there, see if it can repair it by selecting it from the side bar, and then clicking pin "First Aid" from the toolbar at the top.
It says the disk you attached is not readable by this computer - if i try to initialize it nothing happens - same disk worked fine a month ago
I did that and it ran the test then said done...the drive is not, however, visible in my locations nor can I access it once the done screen went away
Make sure External Disks is checked in the Finder Menu ➜ Settings ➜ SideBar.
If it's checked and it still won't appear, then the drive has likely failed, and there's not much more to do.
