Add payment methods to company-managed Apple Accounts

Hello,

Our company recently performed the domain capture and now distribute company-managed Apple Accounts to our employees. We also use MaaS360 as our main MDM for all work-purchased Apple iPhones and iPads.

Our Fiscal department recently rolled out a new system for supervisors to use called Bill Spend & Expense (iOS app available). The issue with this is even if we whitelist the iOS app in our MDM for users to install, the Bill Spend & Expense app requires an Apple Account to be signed in to access the Wallet feature. However, ABM's documentation states that payment methods can't be added to company-managed Apple Accounts. As of right now, no one's able to install this app on their work phone to use even if they're not going to use it for Apple Pay.

Allowing our employees to load their company cards on a personal Apple Account is definitely a no-go for us.

Will the Wallet feature ever be available to managed Apple Accounts for ABM? It makes me wonder how the Bill.com product developers expect businesses who use company-owned accounts and devices to use their service.

Am no expert in this area, and have little knowledge of ABM procedures: we are a "user-to-user" community, so Apple is unlikely to see or respond to your post. However your post to the community deserves some reply.

Apologies that I uncovered no useful information about the "Bill Spend & Expense (iOS app"

The best source of help for a product not made by Apple (a third-party product) is the company or person who made it—its vendor or developer:

See how to: Contact a third-party vendor - Apple Support

or

If the developer has a website, there may be help or support for the app online:

It seems: "You can get support for Apple Business Manager through various Apple Resources"

Seems you can: "Turn on user access to Apple Wallet"

Customize user access to certain apps and services using Apple Business Manager - Apple Support

Eg: says:

"By default, users who sign in with a Managed Apple Account can’t access Apple Wallet.

You can turn on their access so they can add employee badges, if allowed by their organisation.

  1. In Apple Business Manager , sign in with an account that has the role of Administrator or People Manager.
  2. Select Access Management  in the sidebar, then select Apple Services .
  3. Select Wallet, then turn on access to use Apple Wallet."

If you haven't yet seen it:There's also a User Guide for ABM onine:

All the best :-)

We’re experiencing the same issue in our organization. I recently reached out to ABM support, and they confirmed that adding payment or transit cards is currently not supported for Managed Apple Accounts. Unfortunately, they couldn’t provide any information on whether this feature is planned or on their roadmap.

As a workaround, we’ve set up MDM via Intune (though any MDM solution would probably work) to apply restrictions on company-owned devices (and technically it can be also done for personal devices too, just with different configurations). For employees who don’t need Apple Pay in Wallet, we create a Managed Apple Account through ABM. For those who do need Apple Pay, we create an unmanaged Apple Account using an email alias with a different domain—this allows them to sign in and use the company credit card. App installations and all other configurations are still managed through Intune.

I hope this helps. It’s not an ideal or preferred solution, but it’s the best we can do given the current limitations of ABM.
