Restricting Private Browsing and App Store Downloads on iPhone

I am trying to prevent my phone from access to private browsing and downloading on the App Store. The normal method of “limit sites” and “don’t allow downloads” suddenly stopped working.

what do I need to do to get those restrictions running again?

If you want to block Private Browsing and stop App Store downloads, you’ll need to do it through Screen Time. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn that on.

  • For Private Browsing → Content Restrictions > Web Content > Limit Adult Websites. That usually kills Private Browsing.

  • For App Store downloads → iTunes & App Store Purchases > Installing Apps > Don’t Allow.

If it’s for a kid’s phone, you’ll need to set it up with Family Sharing so they can’t just switch it off.

  • The App Store is still cached when searching for it, but you will not be able to open it and it will not appear on any of your Home Screens or the App Library. What happens when you tap on it?
  • What happens when you tap on Done in the Private Browsing screen? After you turn on Limit Adult Websites, it takes about 15 seconds for that setting to take effect and according to the timestamps, you immediately went to Safari to check. For me, after about 15 seconds, Safari will quit and when I reopen, Private Browsing is no longer available.
