Camera draining iPhone battery overnight without running in the background

I have a doubt. I charged my phone last night till the battery percent was up to 80 or so. Then when I woke up next morning, my phone got switched off without any charge. How so..? When I checked my battery status over night it showed camera used 100 percent of my battery. But my camera was not running in the background. What is happening..? I’m scared.

"Camera draining iPhone battery overnight without running in the background: My version is 18.6.2"

Thank you for the followup reply.

With 18.6.2 not being the install, then It is either a hardware glitch, or a software glitch. So, I'd say give it a restart.

Disable the Camera:

Toggle off Camera in Screen Time, and then let it sit for a while, particularly during the time this occurred. That would mean the Camera is inaccessible, and would not be being used at all --period.

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: Screen Time
  3. Tap: Content & Privacy Restrictions
  4. Enter: Keycode
  5. Tap: Allowed Apps
  6. Toggle Off: Camera

If it is still seen...

Then it is a software glitch....

If it is NOT sill seen...

Then, it is a hardware glitch, and you should get this serviced...

Getting your iPhone Serviced:

A. Take to an Apple Store:

You'd setup a Genius Bar Appointment at your local Apple Store, taking it in for service. There, it will be diagnosed, and you'll be provided with your options.

Or...

B. Take this to an AASP:

See an AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) in your local area...

Contacting an AASP:

  1. Go Here: Find Locations - Apple Authorized Reseller
  2. Click: Service & Support
  3. Enter: your location information
  4. See: if there is an AASP nearby
  5. Contact: an AASP that shows up, and find out more about the services that they offer to fix the battery

Update your iPhone:

Go Here:  Update your iPhone Using a Computer - User Tip

Go to: Settings > General > About and view the iOS version. iOS26 is in beta, and it may be a bug that has yet to be fixed. If it is powered off, then it is powered off. Try updating your iPhone, but just not to beta.

Back Up First:

IMPORTANT: If you have an option to update, however, then be certain you backup your iPhone first. That way, you will have something to restore your iPhone from should anything go wrong with the update

100% Battery Use of Turned-Off iPhone:

Can you provide a screenshot? If the phone was off, then it was off. If it was on, then it was on. Not so certain abut the 100% ---go here and see if you can verify that this "100%" is what you are seeing: Check the iPhone Battery Health and Usage - Apple Support

Seeing App Usage:

To show the proportion of the battery used by each app in the selected time interval....

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Select: Battery
  3. Select: Battery Usage by App

"This is the screenshot. Can you please help me..? I’m really scared as to why this happened.. this is the first time this happened.. and is very unusual."

Thank you for the screenshot.

Observing your screenshot, your screen was on for 1 hour: Between 1AM and 2AM. So, perform a Force Restart, because it did not power off as it should have: Force Restart iPhone - Apple Support

The only way for an iPhone to be hacked is if it was jailbroken. So, who is the seller? If Apple or a Retailer, then no worries there.

"I did restart the phone first thing in the morning. Should I do it again..? I kinda switched it off and turned it on. And yes, it was bought from a retailer. Also, is it possible my iPhone was hacked from some YouTube links..?"

-------

  1. Yes. Turn it off, and not back on. You'll see no use.
  2. No. It cannot be hacked from clicking a link somewhere out there on the Internet.

Based on Personal Experience:

As for myself, I always purchase expensive Apple devices from Apple and none other.

"Well, I need to make a clarification here. My iPhone was on through the night, like it wasn’t switched off. But my question is, I wasn’t using the phone, so how could the camera have been using all my battery..? Do you understand my question..?"

-------

I may have misread it: "I did restart the phone first thing in the morning. Should I do it again..? I kinda switched it off and turned it on." Not so certain about. "kinda". And you are saying you restarted this first thing in the morning. So, what time is this restart?

Okay, what happened is, I woke up to my phone dead while I clearly remembered charging it to 80 percent last night. My phone wasn’t switched off through the night. It wasn’t used, is all. Around six in the morning, I switched my phone off and turned it on again immediately. Then I checked my battery percentage use for each app, during the night. And it showed camera. This is what happened. How could it have happened..? When my phone wasn’t in use at all..?

Are you Using iOS26?:

Other than a bug, all I can think of is that the Camera app was open, and the screen was black (but that would mean that the Camera app would have been using the battery too). If you go to: Settings > General > About, what do you see for the iOS version? If it is iOS26, then that is beta, in which case it is most likely a bug. Go here to Ask that: https://developer.apple.com/forums/post/question

If iOS26 does not apply...

Reset this to Factory Settings:

If you are so concerned, then reset you iPhone to factory settings, as if you were to sell it. Go here: What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. Perform as instructed there, including the backup creation and iCloud logout.
