ipad restore with no backup

Hi, my iPad today randomly turned on with the device restore screen. I had no idea why this would happen since I only really have Apple apps downloaded on it, so I don't know what could be corrupted on my device. I tried to update the software through my Mac, but it just loads and then nothing happens.

I really don't want to erase everything because I have valuable things on my iPad. I don't have an iCloud backup, but my notes and contacts appear in iCloud.com if that means anything. I didn't back up because I was never prompted to, and I didn't think it was needed because my iPad is so new.

If the iPad indicates that it must be restored, it already too late to recover anything from the iPad. All data and files locally stored on the devices have already been lost. If you have a pre-existing iCloud or iTunes backup of your iPad, this can be restored to your iPad after you have resolved the current problem. If you don't have a pre-existing backup as you describe, your locally stored data has been irretrievably lost.

You’ll need access to either a Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of macOS).

Use of a PC or Mac computer is unavoidable. If you don’t have access to a suitable computer of your own, that of a helpful friend or family member will suffice. Alternatively, the technicians at the Genius Bar of your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) will be delighted to assist.
