iPad Air Wi-Fi connection issue with boating navigation device

Trying to connect to a boating navigation device. The way it works is the device acts as a WiFi spot and you connect to it and use a cellular signal to update software and load data. I had an old iPad and it connected fine. Just upgraded to a new iPad Air and it doesn’t connect properly. What happens is in the iPad WiFi settings I can connect to the unit. I get the confirming check mark by the units name. However, there is a warning about no Internet connection and the WiFi symbol has exclamation mark through the middle. But when I open the Raymarine app it doesn’t see the nav unit and tells me to connect to the WiFi. I can however connect with my iPhone 15 and it doesn’t have the “No Internet” warning.

Anyone have ideas on how to connect properly?

Perhaps a long shot:

Do you have a 3rd party VPN installed, even if you are not using it? If so, delete the VPN profile in Settings/General/VPN & Device Management/VPN, then restart your device. Don't just turn it off; delete the profile. If that fixes it, you can try reinstalling VPN, but probably shouldn't.

UPDATE: You said “same phone number.” Two cellular devices cannot have the same phone number.

Was your old iPad a cellular model with your new one being WiFi only? Wifi Hotspots are a feature of the cellular provider. It may also be the case that the device has to have a bluetooth connection either within the Raymarine app or by pairing the device.

May be helpful to know the Raymarine device/model for additional information they have on connectivity to the device.
