Sorry to call this out but it needs to be said

Apple computers do not have a traditional BIOS but instead use Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) firmware

One may reconsider there position on this matter

Does it tell you what error (or errors) happened? Can you tell us what it said?

How is the external drive formatted? I'd suggest using APFS for SSD and MacOS Extended (GUID) for HDD. exFAT (MBR) only if Windows/Linux compatibility is really needed.
