PDF Markup Annotations from iPad Appear Blurry on Mac Preview

I am experiencing an issue with PDF annotations created on my iPad and viewed on my Mac.

  • Device: iPad Pro 13-inch (M4) running iPadOS 18.6
  • Device: MacBook (M3) running macOS 15.6.1
  • App: Preview with Markup

When I open a PDF in the Files app on iPad and use the Markup tool (Apple Pencil) to add handwritten notes, the annotations look clear on the iPad. However, when I open the same PDF on my Mac using Preview, the annotations appear very blurry. They remain blurry when opened in other third-party PDF viewers as well, and only look clear when viewed on the same iPad where they were created.

If I annotate the same PDF using a third-party PDF preview app on iPad (not the built-in Files/Preview Markup), the annotations display clearly both on iPad and on Mac. The problem only occurs when I annotate using iPad’s native Preview/Markup in Files.

Is this a known compatibility issue between iPad Markup and macOS Preview? and is there any way to prevent or resolve this so that my handwritten annotations remain sharp across devices and apps?
