My Mac Won’t Delete Files I’ve Backed Up to an External Hard Drive

Before it was only doing this with Logic Pro files, but today as I backed up and tried to delete about 150 GBs of .mov files, the same thing happened. At this point I have basically run out of useable room on my computer unless I can finally find a way to solve this problem.

While I didn’t have a chance to try this with the .mov files, when I first compress Logic files before backing them up externally it doesn’t cause this problem and the files clear out right away when I delete them from my computer (both the original file and the zip file). But otherwise, the hard drive space that should clear out is permanently stuck (I’ve deleted easily over 150 other GB in addition to what I tried to do today and no space frees up).

Here’s what I’ve tried so far to solve this:

  1. rebooted in safe mode
  2. rebooted in safe mode + reinstalling operating system

3. cleared cache

What else could be causing this? Some issue with how the external hard drive and computer are interacting?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 15.6

This seems to dovetail in Purgeable Space

Although you deleted some large files and emptied the Trash

If we may refer back to

" Amount of space available, which can include both free space and “purgeable space”—or space that macOS can free up when needed by removing files from your computer (you can’t manually remove the files that are designated purgeable, but macOS removes them as space is required) "

The Operating System ( not the user ) would hold onto portions of the deleted files until IT decided additional Empty Space is Needed / Required

Then and only then would some of the Purgeable Space would be moved to Empty Space

The computer trash was empty and is where I deleted the files from on the computer. Also, I’m using two external hard drives (and their trashes are also empty).

I’m not sure what you mean by testing the files on an external hard drive, I can import them back to the computer from either one and they open and play back fine.

It’s seeming like a problem that’s somehow specifically related to externally backing up uncompressed Logic Pro Projects.
