Pros and cons of updating MacBook Air M1 from Sonoma 14.5 to Sequoia 15.6.1

Currently running Sonoma 14.5 for almost two years. I know I should update it for security and other reasons. Even though the settings are for automatic updates, it hasn't done that. I seem to have two choices Sonoma 14.7.8. or take the bigger step to go to Sequoia 15.6.1. Any thoughts on that? Pros? Cons?

Sonoma to Sequoia is not update but upgrade so it should not happen automatically (although AFAIR some version did it for some people).

Sonoma is still supported so it has full security. But don't let the system fall very far behind because that might complicate upgrading some libraries like Photos, or Mail etc later.

I check my mission critical apps on an external boot volume before doing an update on the main internal work volume. And make sure to have good backups.

Just another “consideration” re: your MBA M1.

My interpretation of Apple’s MBA lineup and the MacOS 26 Preview is that your MBA M1 will be able to run MacOS 26.

If you delay too long — i.e. to some point shortly after MacOS 26 is released — your current option to upgrade to Sequoia will evaporate.

I “think” my understanding on this is correct …

… and I’m 100% confident that I’ll be “re-calibrated” if I’m wrong. 🫣
