When I am shopping and the company sends me a verification, I go to Comcast email on my mini Mac and retrieve that code. However: to do that it closes the page upon which I am to enter the code. There must be a way to do this.

I understand what you're saying but it is not making sense to me. The Safari web page (a shopping site, like Amazon) closes when you receive a verification email? The Mail app has nothing to do with the Safari app.
What am I missing?
How are you going to Mail from Safari?
Are you clicking on the Mail icon in the Dock, coping the code and then returning to Safari by clicking on Safari's icon in the Dock?
If you use Keychain for passwords and can have the shopping site text you the code it will show up under the code field automatically like this and all you have to do is click on the popup box (orange in my case) to add it to the Code field:
I have all my sites text me the code so it's much easier to get and add it.

Use Two Windows or Two Apps:
Are you using these on two tabs in the window of your Web browser? That code might vanish, if a popup, once you leave the tab. For me, I'm using [command + tab] to get from one app to another (in this case, Safari to Mail). So, see about adding Comcast eMail to the Mail app, to not lose the popup message, or, just open Comcast email in its own window, both minimized.
