Getting unwanted popup menus for each item I click in browser or Illustrator

I just updated to Sequoia 15.6.1. Now each time I click anything in a browser I get unwanted popup menus instead of going directly to the link. This also happens in Illustrator each time I click on an item to move it or select it. (see attached screenshots). Thanks for any advice!

looks like you are right clicking (control clicking)

make changes to your mouse setting

that would be considered a "contextual menu," not a pop-up in general terms.

see Secondary click

The Apple Magic Mouse has primary and secondary click.

If that Magic Mouse is the “simple mouse” you are using, it has easily accessible secondary click.

Triggering the secondary click gets the pop-up being reported here, too.

Here is how to use Magic Mouse:

I did check the “secondary click” option in mouse settings; it is OFF. For now I’ll just keep clicking on the left side, because the mouse is behaving as if I have the right click set up. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I do not normally use a mouse, but I was able to attach an old Apple "mighty mouse" USB mouse, and this is what the settings look. Note that this is set in System Settings->Mouse, then click "Mighty Mouse Settings..."

(probably "Magic Mouse Settings" if you have the new mouse)

Clicking shows this, and now the solution is obvious (set the right side click as "primary button"):
