Make the 'select files' window use a consistent sort

When an app uses the mac selection window for file and I try to select a file, if I switch between the columns view and the list view the sort and grouping always changes. This is extremely unfriendly to the user. I often use the list view to find the file I want, then switch to the column view to see a preview of the file. When the sort of the files reset, I "lose my place".

Is there any way to get the views to use the same sort (and hopefully disable "grouping" entirely)?)

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 14.4

deselect grouping...?

if you do not see the menu item, Control click in the menu area to see your options...

I am using the ui to SELECT a file. This is not directly the finder. From a browser, I am trying to select a file. The window that opens allows me to try to select a file, but I "control-click" and other options have no affect. I can deselect grouping, but there are no options to sort. I can manually click the "Date Modified" to sort in the list view, but the column view does not honor this sort.
