MacBook Pro 2019 & A1407 Thunderbolt Display

Hello There,

i´ve got a strange question / problem.

I´ve conected my 27inch screen to my MacBook Pro via the original Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter.

I can see the picture (so thats working fine) but i can´t use the speakers, webcam and or the ports on the back of the screen (usb etc.)

The os is updated to Sequia.

Does anyone know what i can do ?

Thanks in advance

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 15.6

Greeting..

I am afraid that "the logic board" went bad -- the second most common problem of the TB display.

Since Apple stopped support TB display -- therefore,

a. you can either find "used" part from second hand market. Unfortunately, you have to take the risk of "receiving functional logic board" and DIY repair condundrom. My most recent experience - after bought 5 (not typo) bad logic boards from eBay, the 6th one finally worked.

b. Time for other types of display. I know the convenient of TB display (speaker, so-so webcam, and few more USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet ...etc) that I found external speakers, 4K webcam and Thunderbolt Hub could justify 4k/5K 3rd party displays. Two fo my current settings are LG 5K displays (it does have its webcam and internal speakers), with AudioEngine speaker HD 6, Caldigit TS 4 and Logictech Webcam.

c. If budget is not an issue - Apple Studio Display (my spouse's setting) might be one option.

Thank you, the strange thing is tho that when i first plugged in the display and conected it to my older MacBook Air it was perfectly working with cam, sound etc. But i guess it makes sense that the logic board i faulty. as soon as the display (LogicBoard) heated up it stopped working on the USB etc. I think i will check out some spare parts and replace the board and see. If not, i just have a screen then :-) But thank you for your time and help.

You are quite observing on the "symptoms" of failing/failed TB Logic Board.

It took me a while to gain this insight -- that "stress" test is necessary on any TB display (either purchased from others or been used for years).

I would put on youtube, make FaceTime call and plug USB keyboard/mouse -- all tried to heat up the logic board for the stress test.

However, if the USB portion/function (speaker, webcam and Hub) of TB display does not bother you, TB display will work just fine as any 1440P monitor without those added convenience.

For me, it has been fun projects for me to open the case/replace the logic board or power supply + clean up years of accumulated dust inside the TB displays.

That is, indeed, a good start to deduct/isolate the problem, by looking at the most common problem first - the cable.

Frequently the cable-related issue - is "non functional" screen - due to new MacOS would shut off the screen when data through octopus cable has some fluctuation.

Most common Logic Board issues -- the screen will likely work (diffes from Octopus-cable), but the USB related hardwares (speakers, webcam, 3 USB ports ...etc) stopped.

By, rebooting/rest for a while/detach-reattach TB cable, might get the USB function back (can be different length of functional time), then stopped again and the problem-frequency will increase after.

I did notice the moment when USB function stating to fail - screen will flick shortly and quickly, like a static.
