How to use dictation on Intel Mac Mini with no mic jack?

I have bad arthritis and trying to use voice dictation for my school work.

Its a Mac Mini 2018 i5 on Ventura.

First I tried a dynamic mic plugged into my MOTU M4 USB interface. I get input levels in System Preferences, but the OS dictation does not work (no levels in mic icon), nor is MS Word's Dictate feature able to get mic signal.

Then I tried an old webcam, and in testing I was briefly able to dictate into Notepad with it, but not within a browser or anywhere else. Then when I sat down to do actual school work an hour later, intending to copy/paste everything from Notepad, dictation stopped working there too.

ChatGPT was no help at all finding a resolution. I don't know what else to do.

Why isn't this working? What else can I try? Thanks.

Hard to say, why it's not working, but the Mac mini has a 3.5mm jack, that can be used for headphones, A microphone or a headset that combines both.

Also, make sure the option in System Settings / Preferences for input is set to whatever you are using as a mic. It should list the mic option there.

Also, see the following support document if the mic is not working on any audio recording app either.

8th gen Mini 1/8" jack does not function as mic in, only output.

Interface and webcam have been selected as input during testing. Sys Prefs shows input levels from the mic, but signal does not make it to the Dictation service, nor to MS Word.

I have no problem recording mic signal into Audacity or any of the DAW software I use.

The audio interface I am using is essentially an external DAC with mic preamp, from a reputable manufacturer (MOTU).

No. It's a TRRS jack that functions for stereo output and mono mic input with a correct TRRS microphone or headset. If you don't have a correct TRSS microphone then it won't work.

So what happens when you enable dictation exactly? How are you enabling dictation? Can't test Word, but in say Safari when writing you can go to the Edit menu to enable Dictation. Get a new microphone icon entry cursor.

Works the same in Pages for instance, except it's an orange microphone icon.

Which means the audio input is working correctly.

I’ve found the info online

regarding microphone input contradictory. I have a headset which I use with my

MacBook Pro, but the microphone does nothing when I plug it into my Mini, I

don't even get signal on the input meter in System Preferences like I do with

the other mics I've unsuccessfully tried.

I have Mac OS dictation set to

activate with two presses of the function key. When I do so, I get the

microphone icon as expected, but the meter integrated in the mic icon shows no

signal and no text is input regardless of what app I try to use it with. I have

used the Mac OS dictation in my MacBook Pro in this same manner (with aforementioned

headset or internal mic, not the MOTU interface or webcam) for several years with

no issues.

I have gotten Microsoft Word

dictation to recognize the webcam microphone, but I didn't do anything, I just

tried it again and it worked. I can dictate into Word and copy/paste as a

workaround, but it's a bit cumbersome doing a lot of it for my school work. Copying the text this way leads to the formatting errors you can see throughout this post.

I can't get Mac OS’s integrated

dictation to work at all on my Mini at this stage. I've never used Safari or Pages,

I actually tried to get Pages this week but Apple wouldn't allow me to install

it for some reason I don't understand.

 Thanks for any further guidance.

Anyone? I am still seeking a solution.

Is there anywhere else I can go online for help with this issue?

It was working in MS Word, but I had to re-login to 365 under my new account for my new school, and they took away the dictation feature in Word so now I have no dictation at all despite my arthritis on top of being in 3 classes this semester on top of my work. I am in a lot of pain, please help.

Thanks

There are more than one type of minijacks:

Not entirely true.

The minijack on the mac can do both input and output - even at the same time.

All you need is a Y adapter with two female plugs on one side and a TRRS male connector on the other.

With regular "pc" headphones and mic, connect the green (headphones) to the green, pink (mic) to pink, and plug the other end to your mac. DONE.
