Podcasts keep saying "Temporarily Unavailable." Why?

There are two podcast in my following library that in the past month won't let me play or download them. Every time I try to play one it says, "This episode is temporarily unavailable. Try again later."

I do not have a VPN on my phone, it is updated, I have restarted my phone, I have deleted and redownloaded the app, I have tried all the wifi/cellular combos...nothing. I have reached out to the podcast and they are baffled as well. But both podcasts work through the app on my laptop though. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks!

Hi @mrchrisray -

Your alias sounded oddly familiar, but it took me a sec to figure out why. (It’s a homonyn with the recently departed director of a three letter agency. Obv! 🙃) One puzzle down; on to a more useful one…

I was able to play the most recent episode of MAU (S19, Ep 41). I could both stream the audio via wifi and download/play. This makes me optimistic that pinpointing the source of the issue - as well as a resolution or workaround - is feasible via comparative analysis.

Lets start here:

  • Are you following the normal public feed for these podcasts or a premium/subscriber feed? As an experiment, can you try first unfollowing the public feed, then accessing the episodes?
  • Are you using wifi or cellular data when you receive the error?

Cheers

We’re making progress, at least. (:

Ok, assuming you still have the previous episodes downloaded, try this:

  • Delete the downloads for the episodes that are currently throwing up the temp unavail error (I.e. remove those files from your device hard drive(s))
  • If you have sync across devices enabled for podcasts, disable that (for now)
  • Close out the app and restart your device (just so we can try this next step like daisies)
  • Re-download one or two of those episodes using just cellular. Do the same with one or two episodes using just Wi-Fi, if possible…and make a mental note of which wifi network you used for this (depending on what happens next, this might give us some insight into the source of your original issue)
  • Will the episodes play for you now? Via one or both of those download routes? (If you changed wifi networks in the meantime, make a mental note of that too.)

Lmk how it goes. Or if any of that needs clarification.
