MacBook Pro 14" 2024 Blurry Screen

Had the MacBook pro 14" for 3 weeks and the screen is blurry. External monitor works. Trying hard reset and adjusting the brightness. I can very faintly see some objects on the screen. Is this normal? I'm debating either returning it and getting it replaced or going with a mac mini. It really has me concerned about the quality. I have an older (2017) MacBook pro 15" and the battery has swelled twice. I'm really starting to question the quality of the laptops. Would really like some honest feedback. Thanks!

Yes, forum searching is not a good way to judge the frequency of a problem. Like running "[your make/model car] transmission problems" as a Google search, you'll get a lot of results even if you've never had a problem.

One more note, be sure to check System Settings > Displays and set your resolution to the Default (usually one to the left of More Space). If you have a non-standard resolution selected, your display is scaled and some of those look blurry. For example, on my 16" M1 Pro MBP the default resolution is 1728 x 1117 and if I use that or the More Space option of 2056 x 1329 then the display is crisp. But if I set it to a non-native scaled resolution like 1920 x 1200, the display is blurry. It takes work to select a non-native scaled resolution, you need to option-click one of the sizes then toggle the setting to Show all resolutions, so I assume you haven't done that. But if you have, that's probably the cause in this case.

Edit: or are you saying that in your picture about something should be showing other than essentially a blank screen? If so, that looks like a hardware issue.

Just looking at the backlit keycaps, the picture you posted is blurry. It does not appear that anything is showing on the display itself, so basically it's impossible to interpret your image. Maybe your display is blurry, but you need to find a better way to exemplify that.

You're probably better off making a Genius Bar appointment. In the Apple Store, you can also put your Mac next to a similar model and compare.

As for overall reliability, I have found Mac laptops to be very reliable. I recently recycled a 2010 17" MBP, it still booted and ran fine on the most recent compatible version of macOS. You had bad luck with your 2017 Mac battery (there was a recall program for those, actually). We have 6 Mac notebooks in my house, and I've bought over a dozen for employees in my small company in the past 5 years with no issues.

I really appreciate the response. I did a screenshot of a video which is why it may be slightly blurry, but the screen does not look any better. The more I search the forms the more I see this issue with the laptops. Not saying it’s extremely common, but still a nuisance and something I don’t wanna experience in the future.

to be honest, I think I’m just going to get a Mac mini with an M4 pro, upgrade the storage, upgrade the cores, and upgrade the ram and save 200 bucks.

thank you again for a nice reply
