How can I delete files in iCloud when Finder says "must be downloaded"?

I have removed files from iCloud, but they are still visible in on my MacBook Pro Finder and they seem to take up space.

How can I permanently remove those files?

If I try, I get the notification in Finder: "... must be downloaded."

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 15.6

In the end had a chat with Apple Support. There seemed to be a synchronization issue. This did the trick:

System Settings > tapping on your name at the top > iCloud > Saved in iCloud > turning iCloud Drive off and then on again.

To delete files stored in Apple iCloud

Log into www.icloud.com

Delete the files

While still there, Empty the Trash ( Bin )>> in iCloud

Dear Richard,

Thanks for your reply. The issue is indeed within Finder. See two screenshots (apologies for Dutch, I'll translate):

"You have insufficient quota to upload this part" -> indeed not enough iCloud storage space to upload/sync this folder (5 Gb of storage space in iCloud, 650 Mb free).

and (not sure apout the second word in translating it into English):

"This command cannot be completed, because 'Folder that is causing the issue' must be downloaded".

Storage space on local SSD is 1 Tb, 785 Gb available.

To be clear, the folder never uploaded/synced and has been deleted by me in iCloud.

Hope this helps to craft some advice.

Dear Owl-53,

Thanks for your replay. Did this, but that is not the issue.

I'll clarify below in a response to Richard.Taylor

Kind regards.

By virtue of that reported statement " .. must be downloaded. "

It would mean, from my understanding, the file is in fact only on iCloud

It is not yet On the computer per se

Where? Do you see these files in iCloud Drive, or in some other place in Finder? If you see them in iCloud Drive, what iCloud Status is indicated?

How much free storage do you have at iCloud.com? How much on your Mac?

All your my friend 👍. 🦉
