How to recover disappeared iCloud videos?

I live in Kazakhstan, and no official Apple Support is available to me here. Obviously, there was some kind of bug on Apple’s side, because suddenly all my videos from the past 10 years — only videos, not photos — were deleted.

When we logged into iCloud from a MacBook, they appeared in the “Recently Deleted” folder. We chose “Restore,” and for about one day they were again visible in iCloud, but still did not appear in the Photos app gallery.

Today, after two days, everything has disappeared completely — all the videos from the past 10 years, including the entire history of my child growing up.

Please help me resolve this problem or contact me. Losing all my memories is too cruel.

Videos and photos in iCloud are only changed when actioned by the user. Did you delete the videos anywhere else? That would be the only cause of videos being deleted. If the videos/pictures are not in iCloud or on your device, they no longer exist. You can always restore from your backup(s) that you keep elsewhere using Time Machine or similar.

I am absolutely certain that I did not delete these videos. If I had deleted them myself, the state of my gallery would have remained consistent, without bringing back files that had been deleted long ago.

Moreover, at the same time as my 7 years of videos disappeared, some very old and unwanted videos that I had deleted many months ago suddenly reappeared in my iCloud.

This strongly suggests that the issue is not due to my own actions but rather a bug or error in iCloud.

I don’t have Time Machine 😭

I have been using iCloud for 10 years and paying monthly for 2TB of storage. I never imagined that something like this could happen. The most upsetting part is that in my region there is no Apple Support option available.

The only thing I can hope for is that someone from Apple Support will see this and review my case.

This is truly awful! Unfortunately, it's too easy on a touch screen to accidentally select extra pictures or tap a wrong button. One thing we see is that people mix pictures from iCloud with transfers from a computer, and those two things are incompatible--usually there are warnings. Also, we see disasters happen from 3rd party apps, especially those promising to "clean" or "speed up" the phone. In any case, we can't know exactly what happed in your case.

That's why Apple ( and we here ) recommend keeping back up copies of precious memories and files. Since you use a MacBook, if it's connected to iCloud Photos, then backing up the Mac backs up the pictures. Using Time Machine with an external drive is a good way to keep files safe.

We've all had losseson our computers-- we're so sorry that yours is an especially sad one.
