What is the easiest way to delete and make changes to music on iPhone and iTunes on your computer?

Currently I have the same music and playlists on my phone and iTunes on my computer. It is a mixture of Apple purchases and non purchases. I want to delete songs I don’t want and make other changes however I do not know what the easiest way to go about this is? Do I need to delete the same songs off both my phone and iTunes on my computer? My concern is if I delete songs just off my phone, mainly apple purchase songs, and then plug in my phone to the computer it may redownload those songs I had deleted?

One idea I had is, Is there a way to completely clear out my music on my iPhone and then make the changes and deletions I want on iTunes on my computer, then sync with my phone? I believe I tried doing this once and ended up with song that are greyed out with dotted circles and others that just won’t sync back to my iPhone which were mainly purchased songs.

Thank you

iPhone 15 Plus, iOS 18

It depends on how you put the music on to the iPhone originally.

If you used Sync (synchronise) there is an option to untick (uncheck) songs in your iTunes Library, which will then remove the songs from the phone at the next Sync. The songs remain in your library. It's more complicated in you are using Manually Manage to add music to the phone.

Since you mention the term Sync, I will assume for now that this is the method you are using. If so:

  • in your iTunes Library, simply untick any song that you don't want on the phone
  • connect the phone to your iTunes Library and check on the Device/Settings/Summary pane for the tick box named Sync only ticked songs and videos (it may say "checked songs", dependent upon your country settings). Ensure that the box is ticked (checked):

  • tap the Apply (or Sync) button

Having set this option on, all you need to do now is untick any song that you don't want on the phone. Tick it (back) on again to add the song to the phone at the next Sync.

Alternatively, if you look on the Device/Settings/Music pane you will see an option to sync either the entire music library, or selected playlists, artists, albums and genres. If you choose the selected playlists etc. option, additional options appear (Playlists, Artists, Album and Genres). You select only what you want from these lists, but note that this option does not include individual songs. One method that many people use is to Sync Selected playlists and then add or remove songs from the playlists. You can still play by album etc.

It should not be necessary to clear out the phone and starting again.

Unless you have the grey dotted circles, in which case see If you have music that won't play on your device - Apple Community.
