Archive Utility stopped working... here is the fix

Just bought a MacBook Air June 2025. When I double click a zip file, I either got an error message or it didn't work at all. Sat on Apple support, and they acted like they had never encountered this problem. Archive Utility is not a program that you can delete and reinstall. Instead, it is built in the the Mac operating system. The way to fix this is that you need to reinstall the Mac operating system. This sounds scary, but it was easy, and I have no computer tech skills. When you reinstall the operating system, it does not delete your data. You can back up your data with Time Machine on an external hard drive if you're paranoid though. Steps:

  1. Turn off computer.
  2. On new computers, click and hold down the on button until a different screen appears.
  3. Click "Options."
  4. Click Recovery.
  5. Recover Macintosh HD.
  6. Reinstall MacOS.

It took my computer about 1.5 hours to accomplish. Do not turn off or close the computer while the reinstall is completing. You must have internet access while this process is occurring.

The computer then went to the normal login screen. When I logged in, all my data was still there and archive utility worked again.

Cheers.
