Issue with Microsoft MFA and Captive Portal on iOS Devices
On many school and university campuses, network access is managed through Captive Portals that use Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) for authentication. When Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is enforced, users need to verify their identity using an app like Microsoft Authenticator before they can access the internet.
This works fine on Android devices, where users can easily switch between the Captive Network Assistant (CNA) window and the MFA app to complete the sign-in process. However, on iOS devices, this becomes a challenge—especially when the MFA app is installed on the same device that's trying to connect. The CNA window in iOS restricts app switching, making it very difficult (sometimes impossible) to complete the MFA step and get online.
There was a previous thread discussing this exact issue (Captive Portal and Social Login MFA with … - Apple Community), but it was closed without a clear resolution.
Question for Apple:
Is Apple planning any updates to the behavior of the iOS Captive Network Assistant to better support MFA workflows—particularly when the MFA app is on the same device? This would greatly help users in educational environments where Microsoft Entra ID-based Captive Portals are common.
