resizing photos for wallpaper in imac

I have photos I’ve taken and some are screenshots. When I try to use them for my desktop, they are too large. I only get part of the photos. I have tried adjusting the size in Preview, but still get same results, too large. I can only crop them a little. Any ideas

It's been a while since I've messed with wallpaper, but I think I remember that you need to pay attention to the aspect ratio, the relation between the width and the height of the picture. The picture needs to fill the screen both ways, and some may have to be cut off in one direction to get enough picture in the other. A square picture would have to have the top and bottom cut off to fit the screen, for instance.

My MacBook screen has an aspect ratio of 16:10. TVs and many computer screens are 16:9. So it might help to keep that in mind when cropping the picture.

Could this be the problem?
