Music sync not working. I did everything correctly.

I really wish Apple would fix sync. It has been broken for years and is getting worse, making mysterious decisions about which files to sync and when, and not syncing files that by all means should be transferred. And just today a few changes I made to the files on my iPhone resulted in entire playlists being deleted on my Macbook Pro. That is not supposed to happen. I've been doing syncs for 15 years now on iPods and iPhones, and this has never happened before.
