A SafeBoot Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. Caches get rebuilt automatically.

all is done - except - "startup in safe mode" - still no sound - tomorow going to apple store - to discuss problem with "genious bar " - be in touch . thanks for advice.

Finally, success sound was blocked by FOCUS

After turning Focus off, all sounds are working properly.
